Rams Week 1 Loss: Breaking Down the 27–7 Defeat to the 49ers in Australia
Well, that was rough. The Rams opened their 2026 season on the other side of the planet — the first NFL game ever played in Australia, in front of a massive crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground — and laid an egg, falling 27–7 to the rival 49ers. If you set an alarm for the odd-hours kickoff and watched the whole thing, we salute you. If you slept through it: honestly, you didn’t miss much. The Game in a Nutshell
For about a quarter and a half, this looked like a real football game. After San Francisco opened the scoring with a short Eddy Pineiro field goal, Matthew Stafford hit Puka Nacua on a gorgeous 41-yard strike, and Kyren Williams punched it in from five yards out early in the second quarter. Rams 7, 49ers 3. That, unfortunately, was the high-water mark of the evening.
From there it was all San Francisco. Brock Purdy picked the Rams apart with a death-by-a-thousand-cuts performance — 25 of 34 for 205 yards and three touchdown passes, including a 39-yarder to Demarcus Robinson and scoring strikes to Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel. Pineiro tacked on a 56-yard field goal for good measure. Final: 27–7, and an 0–1 start in what looks like a brutal NFC West.

What Went Wrong
The passing game never got going. Stafford finished 15 of 25 for just 155 yards, and his second-quarter interception — a pass intended for Nacua that cornerback Renardo Green jumped — killed the Rams’ momentum right when they had the lead. Outside of the one deep shot to Nacua, the downfield passing attack was mostly theoretical.
The turnovers were killers. Two giveaways — Stafford’s pick and a fourth-quarter Tyler Higbee fumble — against just one takeaway (a nice interception of Purdy by safety Quentin Lake, one of the few bright spots). You’re not beating a good San Francisco team while losing the turnover battle on a neutral field 8,000 miles from home.
The ground game was fine, but abandoned by the scoreboard. The Rams ran for 95 yards on 21 carries — a respectable clip — but once the deficit hit double digits, the run game stopped mattering. Williams’ touchdown was the offense’s only trip to the end zone all night.
Why It’s Not Panic Time (Yet)
A few things worth remembering before you throw your Nacua jersey in the donation pile. It was one game — there are sixteen left. It was played in Melbourne, after the longest road trip in NFL history, on a cricket ground, against a division rival that always plays the Rams tough. Weird international openers produce weird football, and teams have historically looked sluggish coming off marathon travel. The defense held Purdy under 210 passing yards and forced a turnover; the score looks uglier than the underlying game was. If the Rams look this flat at SoFi in front of a home crowd, then we talk.

The Rams lost 27–7, it was every bit as flat as the score suggests, and the beauty of the NFL is that none of it will matter if they bounce back next week. Sixteen games to go. Deep breaths, Westsiders — and go find a good barstool for the home opener.
